Where Are My Competitors Advertising? How to Find Out

You can find out where your competitors advertise by searching their brand in each platform's free ad library: the Meta Ad Library for Facebook and Instagram, Google's Ads Transparency Center for search, display and YouTube, TikTok's Commercial Content Library, and LinkedIn's Ad Library. In about thirty minutes you can map every major channel a competitor is paying for, without any paid tool.

Presence is easy to see. Weight is the hard part. The libraries tell you where a competitor runs ads, not how much they spend there. The rest of this guide is about getting from a list of channels to a sensible view of where their money actually goes.

Why does it matter which channels competitors use?

Because channel choices reveal strategy faster than anything a competitor says publicly.

A brand spending heavily on Google search is harvesting existing demand. One pouring creative into Meta and TikTok is trying to create demand. A B2B rival suddenly active on LinkedIn has probably changed who they sell to. You learn where the market's attention is being bought, and where it isn't.

It also shows gaps. If none of your competitors advertise on a channel your customers use, that's either an opportunity or a warning, and both are worth knowing.

Which ad libraries should you check first?

Start with the four that cover the bulk of digital ad spend for most businesses. All are free.

ChannelWhere to lookWhat you get
Facebook, Instagram, MessengerMeta Ad LibraryEvery active ad, start dates, platforms
Google Search, Display, YouTube, ShoppingGoogle Ads Transparency CenterAds by region and date, by format
TikTokCommercial Content Library (EU) and Creative CenterAdvertiser search for EU-shown ads; top ads by industry
LinkedInLinkedIn Ad LibraryRoughly a year of ads; targeting detail for EU delivery

Our individual guides go step by step: seeing competitors' Facebook ads, checking competitors' Google ads, TikTok ad spy tools, and the LinkedIn Ad Library.

Several other platforms, including Pinterest, Snapchat and X, publish ad repositories for ads shown in the EU because of European transparency rules. Coverage and search quality vary, but they're worth a check if your category is active there.

How do you check channels that have no public library?

Some channels don't publish anything, notably many native networks, programmatic display outside Google, podcasts and most affiliate programmes. For those, you infer.

Look at their website's tracking tags. Ad platforms need a pixel or tag on the site to measure conversions. Opening a competitor's site with your browser's developer tools, or a free tag-detection extension, shows which platforms they've installed. A TikTok pixel, a Pinterest tag, a Reddit pixel or a Microsoft Ads tag strongly suggests they advertise there, or did recently.

Read their URLs. When you click a competitor's ad, the landing page URL often carries UTM parameters such as utm_source. Those names reveal how they label channels internally.

Browse where their customers are. Visit the publishers, podcasts and newsletters your audience reads. Repeated sponsorships are easy to spot once you look.

Check affiliate networks and coupon sites. A brand with an affiliate programme usually lists it on its site footer, and its codes show up on coupon sites.

  2. 2
Check tracking tags on their sitePixels for platforms you could not see in a library.
  3. 3
Click a few of their adsNote the UTM source names and where each channel sends people.
  4. 4
Scan the long tailEU repositories, podcasts, newsletters, affiliate pages.

A full channel map for one competitor takes 30 to 45 minutes.

How can you tell which channel matters most to them?

No library shows spend for normal commercial advertisers. You're estimating from behaviour, which is imperfect but directionally useful.

Volume. How many live ads do they have on each platform? Three hundred ads on Meta and five on LinkedIn tells a clear story.

Longevity. How long have their ads been running? Advertisers keep paying only for ads that work, so long-running ads mean steady investment on that channel. The Meta Ad Library shows a "Started running on" date for every ad.

Freshness. How often do new ads appear? Constant new creative needs budget to test.

Consistency. Do they appear in the library every time you look, or on and off? Seasonal advertisers show up in bursts.

Our guide to estimating competitor ad spend turns these into a rough range. Present it as an estimate, not a number.

What should the output look like?

A single page per competitor, kept in one shared place. Mine looks roughly like this:

ChannelActive?VolumeLongest-running adMain message
MetaYes~120 ads7 monthsPrice-led bundles
Google SearchYesBrand + category termsn/aFree shipping, reviews
YouTubeYes6 videos3 monthsFounder story
TikTokEU only seen~15 adsUnknownUGC unboxing
LinkedInNo---

The table is illustrative, but the shape is what matters: one row per channel, the same columns every time, and a note on the message they push there. Our competitor ad watchlist guide shows how to maintain these across several competitors.

How do you keep track as things change?

Channel mixes shift, especially around launches and seasons, so a one-off audit goes stale within a quarter.

A lightweight routine:

  • Monthly: re-check the four big libraries for your top five competitors and update volume and message.
  • Quarterly: re-run the tag check and the long-tail scan.
  • Immediately: whenever a competitor announces a launch, funding or new product, since channel moves usually follow.

On Meta, where most brands run the most creative, ads vanish from the library as soon as they are switched off, so saving the long-runners is what lets you look back. I use our free Meta Ad Library downloader to pull a competitor's live ads into one ZIP with a searchable index and a CSV of start dates each month. The manual method is in how to download Facebook Ad Library videos.

All of this is standard competitive research on public data. What you do with it should stay on the right side of the line: learn the angle and the channel logic, then make your own ads. Copy the angle, not the asset. This isn't legal advice.

If you only have time for one thing, make it the Meta check. For most consumer brands it's where the largest volume of creative lives, it's the only library that shows every live ad worldwide, and the start dates give you a built-in way to see which messages a competitor is committed to.

FAQ

How can I find out where my competitors advertise?

Search their brand in the free ad libraries for Meta, Google, TikTok and LinkedIn, then check their website's tracking tags for platforms without a library. Together those show nearly every paid channel they use.

Can I see my competitors' ads for free?

Yes. The Meta Ad Library, Google Ads Transparency Center, LinkedIn Ad Library and TikTok's Commercial Content Library are all free to search. Paid tools mainly add history and filters.

How do I know if a competitor runs Google Ads?

Search their name in Google's Ads Transparency Center at adstransparency.google.com. You can also click the menu on any of their live search ads and choose to see more ads by that advertiser.

Can I see how much a competitor spends on each channel?

Not directly, since spend isn't published for normal commercial ads. You can estimate relative weight from how many ads they run on each channel, how long those ads stay live, and how often they launch new ones.

How often should I check competitor advertising?

Monthly is enough for most businesses, plus an immediate check whenever a competitor launches something. A quarterly check of tracking tags catches new channels outside the main libraries.
