Facebook Ad Library UK: How to Research UK Ads

The Facebook Ad Library UK view is the same free Meta Ad Library everyone uses, filtered to United Kingdom, and it shows every active ad that's being delivered to people in the UK. Because the UK isn't covered by the EU Digital Services Act, UK-only commercial ads show less data than EU ads, while UK political and social-issue ads are archived with spend and impression ranges.

Here's how to set it up, what you will and won't see, and how to use it to research UK competitors properly.

How do you use the Facebook Ad Library in the UK?

Go to facebook.com/ads/library. You don't need to run ads yourself to use it.

Then set three things before you search:

  1. 1
Choose the countrySelect United Kingdom from the list.
  2. 2
Pick the ad category"All ads" for brands, or political.
  3. 3
Search the advertiserPick the Page from the dropdown.
  4. 4
Apply filtersActive status, platform, media type, dates.
  5. 5
Check start datesLong-running ads are the ones to study.
The basic route to UK ads in the Meta Ad Library.

The country filter matters more than people expect. The country setting shows ads delivered in that country, not ads from companies based there. A US brand shipping to Britain will show up in a UK search. A British brand that only advertises in Ireland won't.

If you want the full tour of filters, cards and quirks, our Meta Ad Library guide covers them in detail. The rest of this article focuses on what changes when the country is set to the UK.

What does the Facebook Ad Library UK view show?

For ordinary commercial ads, the Meta Ad Library UK view shows the same core fields as most countries:

  • The creative: image, video or carousel.
  • The primary text, headline and CTA button.
  • The advertiser's Page name.
  • A "Started running on" date and the Library ID.
  • Platform icons for Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Audience Network.
  • A note when the ad has multiple versions.

What it doesn't show for these ads is spend, impressions, engagement or targeting. And once a UK-only commercial ad is paused, it drops out of the library.

Does the UK get the EU's extra Ad Library data?

No, not for UK-only ads. This is the most common misunderstanding about the ad library in the United Kingdom.

The extra transparency in the EU comes from the EU Digital Services Act. The UK left the EU before the DSA applied, so those EU-only rules don't cover ads shown only to people in Britain.

That means the EU extras don't apply to UK-only ads:

FeatureEU-delivered adsUK-only commercial ads
Active ads visibleYesYes
Inactive ads kept in the libraryYes, for a periodNo, they drop out when paused
Reach estimatesYesNo
Targeting info (age, gender, location)Yes, limitedNo
Spend or engagementNoNo
Shown in the official Ad Library APIYesNo

There's one wrinkle. Many UK brands also advertise into Ireland or other EU countries. If the same ad was delivered in the EU as well, its details view may show EU transparency data, because the EU part of its delivery falls under the DSA.

For a deeper look at why the data differs by region, see Facebook Ad Library EU vs US. The same logic applies to the UK, which sits on the non-EU side.

How do Facebook ads UK political ads work in the library?

Political and social-issue ads are handled very differently from commercial ads, in the UK as elsewhere.

Before running ads about social issues, elections or politics in the UK, an advertiser has to go through Meta's authorisation process, which includes confirming their identity and location. Each ad must then carry a "Paid for by" disclaimer naming who funded it.

In the Ad Library, these ads are:

  • Archived, so they stay visible after they stop running. Meta says it keeps them for seven years.
  • Shown with spend ranges, not exact figures.
  • Shown with impression ranges, again as bands.
  • Broken down by audience, such as age, gender and location, where Meta provides it.

To browse them, set the country to United Kingdom and the ad category to issues, elections or politics, then search a party, campaign group, candidate name or topic. Our explainer on political ads in the Meta Ad Library covers how to read the disclaimer and spend fields.

What does the Ad Library Report show for the UK?

The Ad Library Report is a separate view that summarises political and social-issue ad spend by country.

Choose United Kingdom and you can see total spend on these ads over a period, broken down by advertiser and by location within the country. You can also download the data. It's useful for journalists, researchers and anyone tracking election spending.

It does not cover commercial ads. There is no spend report for normal brand advertising in the UK or anywhere else outside political categories. Our guide to the Meta Ad Library Report explains each column and its limits.

How can you see UK competitors' Facebook ads?

This is where the UK ad library search earns its keep. The method is the same as anywhere, with a few local tweaks.

Search by Page first. If you know the competitor, type their name and select their Page from the dropdown suggestions. Don't press enter on a keyword. Keyword search matches text inside ads and is close to exact-match, so it misses a lot. Our walkthrough on how to see competitors' Facebook ads covers the Page route step by step.

You can also start from the competitor's Facebook Page. Open "Page transparency" and follow the link to their ads.

Use British spelling and phrasing for discovery. When you don't know who the competitors are, keyword search is your discovery tool. Because it matches literal text, spelling matters.

Search the way UK advertisers write:

  • British spellings, such as colour, personalised, favourite, moisturiser, organise.
  • Local delivery phrases, such as "free UK delivery", "next day delivery" or "UK stock".
  • Local vocabulary, such as mum, trainers, jumper, postcode or high street.
  • Offers written the way UK shops write them, such as "free delivery over £" style thresholds or prices in pounds.

Then click through to the Pages behind the results and search those Pages directly.

Look for local signals. Not every ad in a UK search comes from a UK business. To separate local competitors from international brands shipping in, check for prices in pounds, UK addresses or towns in the copy, and landing pages on .co.uk domains. Those signals tell you who's actually competing for the same customers.

Judge by longevity. Once you have a list of Pages, open each one in the UK view and sort out the long-runners. The "Started running on" date is your best free performance signal. An ad that's been live for months is very likely making money.

For each long-runner, note the pattern: the hook in the first line or first seconds, the visual style, the offer (bundle, percentage off, free delivery threshold) and the CTA. That's the angle worth testing in your own words.

How do you keep UK ads before they disappear?

UK-only commercial ads vanish from the library as soon as they're paused, and there's no EU-style archive to fall back on. If you're building a swipe file, save as you go.

You can screenshot, screen record, or note Library IDs. I use our free extension, the Meta Ad Library downloader, to save HD videos, images and full carousels straight from a UK search. It's ours, free, and needs no account.

Whatever you save, study the angle and build your own version with your own product, photos and proof. Don't run another brand's creative. This isn't legal advice.

FAQ

How do I use the Facebook Ad Library in the UK?

Go to facebook.com/ads/library, set the country to United Kingdom and choose "All ads" or the political category. Then select an advertiser's Page from the search suggestions or search keywords in ad text. It's free and works without running ads.

Does the UK Ad Library show inactive ads?

Not for UK-only commercial ads. They drop out once paused. Political and social-issue ads are archived, and ads also delivered in the EU may keep an inactive record.

Is the UK covered by the EU Digital Services Act in the Ad Library?

No. The DSA is EU law and the UK is outside the EU, so UK-only ads don't get the EU's extra reach, targeting or inactive-ad data. An ad that was also delivered in an EU country may show that data for its EU delivery.

How do I see UK political ads on Facebook?

Set the country to United Kingdom and the ad category to issues, elections or politics, then search a name or topic. Each ad shows its "Paid for by" disclaimer, spend range and impression range. The Ad Library Report gives country-level spend totals.

Yes. The Meta Ad Library is free in the UK and everywhere else, and you don't need an ad account. Some features may ask you to be logged in to Facebook.
