Political Ads in the Meta Ad Library, Explained

Examples of political ads on Facebook sit in a separate, much more transparent part of the Meta Ad Library than everything else. Political and social-issue ads carry a named funder, a spend range, an impressions range, and they stay in the archive after they stop running.

That is the opposite of how commercial ads behave, and the difference explains a lot of confusion about what the Ad Library and its API can actually do.

What counts as a political ad on Facebook?

Ads about elections, politics, or social issues — a broader definition than most advertisers expect.

Meta's category covers ads made by, on behalf of, or about a candidate, a political party, or an elected official, plus ads about legislation and about social issues in the places where they are regulated. Social issues vary by country and typically include things like immigration, civil rights, health, and the economy.

The consequence is that plenty of non-political organisations end up in the category. Charities, advocacy groups, and even brands running campaign-style messaging about a social topic can be classified this way.

What does the Ad Library show for political ads?

Far more than it shows for anything else.

Data pointCommercial adsPolitical / social-issue ads

Start dateYesYes
Amount spentNoYes, as a range
ImpressionsNoYes, as a range
Who paid for itNoYes, named funding entity

Spend and impressions are the two fields commercial researchers keep looking for and never find. They exist only here, and only as ranges rather than exact figures.

The demographic and location breakdowns attached to political ads are similarly unique. For a normal ecommerce ad, none of that is exposed, which is why competitor research has to rely on other signals entirely.

How much do political ads spend on Facebook?

The library reports it as a range per ad, and as totals per advertiser in the Ad Library Report.

Ranges are wide by design — an ad might be listed as spending between two bands rather than an exact number. Aggregated across an advertiser's ads, the totals become genuinely useful for journalists and researchers tracking a campaign's scale over a period.

The Ad Library Report is the download-oriented view of that data, covering spend by advertiser and by region over time. What it does and does not include is covered in the Meta Ad Library Report.

Can you see who paid for a Facebook political ad?

Yes. Every political or social-issue ad carries a "Paid for by" disclaimer naming the funding entity, and the advertiser behind it has completed identity and location verification.

The disclaimer is the honest, verifiable part. The funding entity itself can still be an organisation whose backers are not disclosed, which is a known limitation of the whole transparency regime rather than a flaw in the tool. Researchers usually pair the Ad Library name with public filings elsewhere.

Switch category :: Choose "Issues, elections or politics"
Set the country :: Political data is country-scoped
Read the disclaimer :: The "Paid for by" line names the funder

Why does the API only cover political ads?

Because the API was built for transparency compliance, not for competitor research.

The official Meta Ad Library API returns political and social-issue ads, plus EU ads made available under the Digital Services Act. It does not return ordinary commercial ads from a shoe brand or a SaaS company, and no key or approval level changes that.

This is the single most common misunderstanding about the library. Developers find the API documentation, assume it covers everything visible on the website, and build something that returns nothing. The detail is in the Meta Ad Library API, and the workable alternatives are in Meta Ad Library API alternatives.

How long are political ads kept?

They stay in the archive after they stop running, which is the defining difference from commercial ads.

Normal ads vanish from the library at pause with no record and no way to retrieve them — the reason that happens is explained in why ads disappear from the Ad Library. Political and social-issue ads are retained, so a campaign from a previous election cycle is still readable long after the ads stopped serving.

The EU is the other place where the library keeps more than it does elsewhere, including inactive ads and limited targeting and reach information under transparency law. The regional differences are mapped in the Ad Library EU versus US.

What can commercial advertisers learn from the political archive?

Two things worth borrowing, and one trap.

Message testing at scale. Political advertisers run dozens of copy variants against the same image, which makes the archive an unusually clean library of message testing. The variants are all visible side by side.

Audience framing. Because demographic breakdowns are published, you can see which messages reached which age bands — a level of feedback commercial research never gets.

The trap is assuming the transparency extends to your own category. It does not. For commercial competitor research, the signals available are the ad itself and how long it has been running, which is the foundation everything else in what is the Meta Ad Library is built on.

If you are saving ads from either side of the library, the commercial half is the one that needs saving urgently, since it is not archived. Our free Meta Ad Library Downloader exports a whole search as one ZIP with a searchable index, which is the closest thing to a personal archive for ads Meta does not keep.

FAQ

What counts as a political ad on Facebook?

Ads about elections, candidates, parties, legislation, or regulated social issues. The social-issue list varies by country and often captures advocacy groups and charities alongside political campaigns.

How much do political ads spend on Facebook?

The Ad Library publishes a spend range for each political ad and totals per advertiser in the Ad Library Report. Ranges are broad and exclude production and agency costs.

Can you see who paid for a Facebook political ad?

Yes. Every political and social-issue ad carries a "Paid for by" disclaimer naming the funding entity, and the advertiser has completed identity verification with Meta.

Does the Meta Ad Library API include commercial ads?

No. The official API returns political and social-issue ads plus EU ads under the DSA. Ordinary commercial competitor ads are not available through it at any access level.

How long are political ads kept in the archive?

They remain accessible after they stop running, unlike commercial ads, which disappear from the library as soon as the advertiser pauses them.
