How to Run Ads for Free on Facebook (Honest Answer)

No, you can't run paid Facebook ads for free, and if you're searching how to run ads for free, the honest answer is that every ad Meta delivers is billed to a payment method. What you can do is get free reach on Facebook and Instagram through organic posts, Reels, groups and Marketplace, and occasionally use ad credits Meta offers to some new advertisers.

I run Meta ads for ecommerce brands, and this question comes up with almost every new client. Here is what's actually free, what isn't, and how to start spending as little as possible.

Can you run Facebook ads for free?

Not paid ads. When you create a campaign in Ads Manager or tap "Boost" on a post, you're buying ad delivery. Meta charges you for impressions or results, depending on how the ad is set up.

There are a few things people confuse with free ads:

  • Boosting a post. It's a paid ad with a simpler setup. Not free.
  • Creating an ad account. Free to set up. You pay only when ads deliver.
  • Posting on your Page or profile. Free, but that's organic content, not an ad.

So "free Facebook ads" really means one of two things. Either free organic promotion, or paid ads covered by a credit. Both are covered below.

What is the minimum you have to spend on Facebook ads?

Less than most people think. There's no big upfront fee or monthly minimum to advertise on Meta.

What exists is a small daily budget floor per ad set. The exact amount depends on your account currency and how you're billed, and Meta adjusts it from time to time, so check the number shown in Ads Manager when you set your budget.

In practice, the floor is rarely the problem. The real question is how much you need to spend to learn anything useful. A budget that's technically allowed can still be too small to tell a good ad from a bad one. Our guide on how much to spend on Facebook ads covers how I set a first test budget.

So how do you run ads for free on Facebook?

Organic reach on Facebook is harder than it used to be, but it isn't zero. These are the channels I'd use before spending a cent.

1. Page and profile posts. Post consistently about what you sell, with real photos and clear prices. Organic Page reach is often low, so treat this as a base, not a growth engine.

2. Reels. Short vertical video is where Meta pushes organic reach hardest right now. A Reel can reach people who don't follow you, which regular posts rarely do. It's the closest thing to a free ad.

3. Facebook Groups. Local buy-and-sell groups, hobby groups and niche communities. Read each group's rules first. Most ban direct promotion outside set days or threads, and spamming gets you removed.

4. Marketplace listings. For physical products and local sellers, listing on Marketplace is free for individuals. Rules and fees for businesses and shipped items differ by country, so check what applies to you.

5. Instagram organic. Posts, Stories and Reels on Instagram follow the same logic. Reels get the most reach from non-followers.

6. Messaging and WhatsApp. Replying fast to comments and messages turns organic attention into sales. It costs time, not money.

What is the real difference between organic vs paid Facebook?

Control. Organic content reaches whoever the algorithm decides to show it to. Paid ads let you choose the audience, the placement, the budget and the goal.

Organic is free but unpredictable. One Reel might reach thousands of people and the next might reach a handful. You can't reliably scale it by doing more of the same.

Paid is predictable enough to plan around. If an ad brings in customers at a cost you can afford, you can spend more on it. That's the whole reason businesses pay.

Organic (free)
  • Costs time, not money
  • Reach is unpredictable
  • Hard to target
  • Good for testing ideas
You can with paid
  • Choose who sees it
  • Set a daily budget
  • Optimise for sales or leads
  • Scale what works
Organic is free but unpredictable. Paid costs money but gives control.

My advice to new advertisers is to use both. Use organic to find the message, then pay to scale the one that works. A Reel that gets strong organic engagement is often a great candidate for your first ad.

Does Meta give free Facebook ad credit?

Sometimes. Meta has offered promotional ad credits to some new advertisers, often shown as an offer in Ads Manager or in a notification after you set up a business account. Partners and hosting platforms have sometimes bundled credits too.

The honest part: credits are not guaranteed. They depend on your country, your account and whatever promotion is running at the time. Some require you to spend a set amount first before the credit applies. I can't tell you whether you'll see one, so check your own account.

A credit is best used for learning. Put it toward a small, focused test with one clear goal, not a scattered set of boosted posts.

Can you research Facebook ads for free?

Yes, and this is the most valuable free thing Meta offers advertisers. The Meta Ad Library at facebook.com/ads/library shows every active ad from every advertiser, and it costs nothing to use. Our explainer on whether the Meta Ad Library is free covers exactly what you get and what it leaves out.

Before you spend your first dollar, study what competitors are running:

  1. 1
Open the Meta Ad LibraryPick your country and "All ads".
  2. 2
Search competitors and keywordsUse brand names and product words.
  3. 3
Check start datesAds running for weeks are usually working.
  4. 4
Note hooks and offersWhat do the long-runners have in common?
  5. 5
Write your first adBorrow the angle, not the creative.
A free research routine that costs time, not ad spend.

Longevity matters here. Advertisers don't keep paying for ads that don't work, so an ad that has been running for months is a strong hint. The full walkthrough is in our Meta Ad Library guide.

The library has no download button, and ads vanish when they're paused. I save the ones worth studying with our free Meta Ad Library downloader, which adds a download button to each ad and has no account or sign-up. There's also a manual method in how to download Facebook Ad Library videos.

Copy the angle, not the asset. Don't reuse someone else's images or video in your own ads. This isn't legal advice.

How do you start with as little spend as possible?

If free reach isn't enough and you want to try paid, keep the first test tight.

  1. Pick one goal. Sales, leads or messages. Not all three.
  2. Pick one offer. Your best seller or strongest service, with a clear price.
  3. Use your best organic content. A Reel or post that already got engagement.
  4. Run two or three ads, not ten. Give each enough budget to show a result.
  5. Set a stop point. Decide in advance how much you'll spend before judging it.

Avoid spending your first budget on Page likes. Followers don't pay bills, and our note on Facebook Page like ads explains why I rarely recommend them.
