Is There an Ad-Free Facebook? Where You Can Pay to Skip Ads

Yes, but only in some countries: Meta sells a paid monthly "subscription for no ads" for Facebook and Instagram in the EU, EEA and Switzerland, and a paid no-ads option reached the UK in 2025. In most of the world, including the US and India, there is no ad-free Facebook at any price, so the best you can do is control which ads you see.

I buy Facebook ads for a living, so I spend a lot of time on the other side of this question. People ask me whether they can make the ads go away. The honest answer depends almost entirely on where you live, and then on how much you are willing to tweak. Here is the full picture.

Why is there an ad-free Facebook in Europe but not elsewhere?

Regulation. European privacy and competition rules put pressure on Meta's model of showing personalised ads based on your activity, unless you have given valid consent. Meta's answer, starting in late 2023, was to give people in the EU, EEA and Switzerland a choice: keep using Facebook and Instagram free with ads, or pay a monthly subscription and see no ads.

Regulators have kept pushing on whether that choice is fair, and Meta later added a free option with less personalised ads for European users. The details of that option have shifted over time, so I won't pretend to know the exact current version in your country. Check your own Accounts Centre.

The UK followed in 2025 with its own paid no-ads option.

Outside those markets, nobody has forced Meta's hand, and ads are how Facebook pays for itself. So there is no subscription to buy.

How much does Facebook without ads cost?

I'm not going to quote a number, because the price differs by country, has changed since launch, and depends on how you pay. What is consistent:

  • It is a monthly fee, not a one-off.
  • It is cheaper when you subscribe on the web than through the iPhone or Android app, because the app stores take a cut.
  • It applies across the Facebook and Instagram accounts you link in Accounts Centre, rather than being bought separately per app.

To see your actual price, open Facebook, go to Settings, then Accounts Centre, and look for the ad preferences or subscription section. If your country is eligible, the offer and its price will be there. If you see nothing about a subscription, it isn't available where you are.

Is there an ad-free Facebook app I can download?

No. There is no official ad-free Facebook app. The no-ads subscription, where it exists, works inside the normal Facebook and Instagram apps and on the website.

Be careful with third-party apps in the app stores that promise "Facebook without ads". At best they wrap the mobile website in a browser view. At worst they ask you to log in to Facebook through them, which hands your password to a stranger. I would never type my Facebook login into an app Meta didn't make.

What can I do about Facebook ads if I can't pay to remove them?

Quite a lot, actually, even if the number of ad slots stays the same. These are the controls I would use, in order of how much difference they make.

Ad preferences

In Settings, Accounts Centre, Ad preferences, you can see the advertisers you have seen recently and the topics Meta associates with you. Removing interests and hiding advertisers here changes what fills the slots, even though the slots stay.

Ad topics

Ad topics lets you ask to see fewer ads about specific subjects. This is the one to use for sensitive categories, like alcohol, parenting or weight loss, that you would rather not be reminded of.

Hide ad and hide all ads from this advertiser

On any ad, the three-dot menu lets you hide that ad, and there is usually an option to hide all ads from that advertiser. If one brand is following you around, this is the fastest fix.

"Why am I seeing this ad?"

Same three-dot menu. It tells you in plain language why that ad reached you, for example because you visited the advertiser's site, or because of an interest or a location. Our post on why there are so many ads on Facebook explains what those reasons mean and why ads feel like they are following you.

The Feeds tab

Facebook's Feeds tab lets you view posts from friends, groups or Pages more directly instead of the recommended main feed. It doesn't make Facebook ad-free, but it cuts a lot of the suggested content around the ads, and I find it a calmer way to check in on people I actually follow.

Do ad blockers work on Facebook?

On a desktop browser, some ad blockers can hide many Sponsored posts on facebook.com. It is a moving target, though. Facebook changes how Sponsored posts are marked in the page, and blockers have to keep catching up, so results are patchy.

The trade-offs are worth knowing:

  • Only on desktop web. Browser blockers do nothing inside the Facebook app on your phone.
  • They can break things. Overzealous filters sometimes hide normal posts or break parts of the page.
  • Permissions. A blocker reads every page you visit. Stick to well-known, actively maintained ones and avoid unknown extensions that ask for more than they need.

Which option fits me?

Here is the quick decision table I give friends who ask.

Where you areAd-free optionBest realistic move
EU, EEA or SwitzerlandPaid monthly subscription; less personalised ads option also offeredCheck Accounts Centre for your price and options
United KingdomPaid monthly no-ads option (from 2025)Check Accounts Centre; web is cheaper than app
United StatesNoneAd preferences, Ad topics, hide advertisers
IndiaNoneAd preferences, Ad topics, hide advertisers
Most other countriesNoneSame controls, plus a desktop blocker if you use the website

What if I'm a marketer and actually want to see the ads?

This is where it flips. Every ad you are trying to hide is useful data for someone running a business.

Meta publishes every active ad from any advertiser in the Meta Ad Library, free, at facebook.com/ads/library. You can search a brand, see all its live ads, and read the "Started running on" date. Ads that have run for months are usually the ones making money, because advertisers stop paying for ads that don't work. If you want to understand what Sponsored posts are and how they get into your feed, our explainer on Facebook Sponsored ads covers it.

I use the Library daily. When I see an ad in my own feed that I want to study, I go to the Library and look up the advertiser. Our guide to finding an ad you saw on Facebook shows how to track it down if you scrolled past it.

The Library has no download button, and ads disappear from it once the advertiser stops them. So here is how I keep them: I use our free extension, the Meta Ad Library Downloader. It adds a Download button to every ad, saves videos in original HD without a watermark, and grabs full carousels card by card. For a whole competitor, "Find all ads" collects every running ad into one ZIP with a searchable swipe board and a CSV. It is free and needs no account. The full guide to downloading Ad Library videos walks through it.

A quick note if you do this: save ads for research, not to re-run them. Copy the angle, not the asset. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

So what's the bottom line?

If you are in the EU, EEA, Switzerland or the UK, you can pay a monthly fee for Facebook without ads, and Accounts Centre tells you what it costs. Everywhere else, ad-free Facebook doesn't exist, so tune what you see with Ad preferences, Ad topics and hiding advertisers, and use a reputable blocker on desktop if you really want to.

And if your job is advertising, stop hiding the ads and start studying them.

FAQ

Is there an ad-free version of Facebook?

Only as a paid subscription, and only in certain regions. Meta offers a monthly subscription for no ads in the EU, EEA and Switzerland, and a paid no-ads option in the UK. Elsewhere, Facebook is free with ads and there is no ad-free version.

How much does Facebook without ads cost?

It is a monthly fee that varies by country and is cheaper when you subscribe on the web than through the mobile apps. Prices have changed since launch, so check Settings, then Accounts Centre, for the exact amount where you live.

Can I get ad-free Facebook in the US or India?

No. The no-ads subscription isn't offered in the US, India or most other countries. You can reduce irrelevant ads with Ad preferences, Ad topics and hiding advertisers, but the ad slots stay.

Is there an ad-free Facebook app?

There is no official ad-free Facebook app. Where the subscription exists, it works inside the normal apps and website. Avoid third-party apps that promise ad-free Facebook and ask for your login, since that puts your account at risk.

Do ad blockers work on Facebook?

Some desktop browser blockers hide many Sponsored posts on facebook.com, but results are inconsistent because Facebook keeps changing its page. They don't work inside the mobile app, and they can occasionally hide normal posts too.
